About

I’m Stephen Thompson, MD, a sports medicine orthopedic surgeon at EMMC Sports Health. I’m passionate about providing education to help local athletes reach their highest potential, prevent injuries, and know what to do if an injury occurs. In this blog, I discuss sports-related hot topics in the news, share tips that can help athletes excel, and provide information that is helpful to parents of student athletes. I encourage discussion and want to hear what you think about these topics.

When I’m not practicing medicine, I’m with my family or I’m writing and editing. I am co-editor-in-chief of the widely used reference textbook DeLee and Drez’s Orthopaedic Sports Medicine as well as co-editor-in-chief of the seventh edition of Miller’s Review of Orthopaedics. I also wrote the Handbook of Splinting and Casting.

I arrived in Bangor in 2014 after pursuing my education in Canada, Australia, and the United States. I completed a bachelor’s degree in physiology and master’s degree in medical education at the University of Toronto, then travelled the world and ultimately graduated from Sydney Medical School with honors. I completed my residency in orthopaedics at the University of Maryland/R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Institute program. I then completed my first sports medicine fellowship at the Fowler-Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic in London, Ontario and then a second at the Oakville Sports Injury Clinic in Oakville, Ontario.

My clinical interests include shoulder instability and knee ligamentous injuries. My research primarily focuses on anterior shoulder instability.

I look forward to interacting with you on my blog. You can read more about what I do by visiting sports.emmc.org or you can reach me directly at stephenthompson@emhs.org.
